Two and a half years of relentless effort, the Jaypee Group has been hard at work to create the venue for India’s inaugural F1 grand prix. At a ceremony recently held in the capital, the Jaypee Group have unveiled the name and logo for the circuit. India’s very first F1 Racing Grid will be hailed as the Buddh International Circuit. The logo, which was also unveiled at the ceremony consists of a swoopy speedy heart like shape painted in the shades of the Indian tricolor.
The F1 track which is being constructed at an outstanding pace is located on the outskirts of the city of Greater Noida. The 5.14 kilometer state of the art track is expected to be completed by July, well in time to allow preparations for the F1 in October. Deemed to be one of the fastest tracks in the world the track features include wide stretches for easier overtaking, the typical long straight with a small dip, a long corner where cars can excess speeds of 250km/h and also a blind curve created by elevation changes.
The Buddh International Racing Circuit has been designed by the renowned German architect and many a F1 racetrack designer - Herman Tilke. In fact Tilke has designed tracks in Malaysia, China, Bahrain, Indonesia, UAE and Turkey.
According to Tilke, the Indian circuit will be one of the fastest circuits anywhere in the world. The preliminary testing of the track (on simulators) has led to some very interesting results indeed. In fact to give you an idea of how fast the track is here’s a fun fact – The fastest lap by a driver testing the track was managed in merely 82 seconds. How’s that for fast?
A Jaypee Group spokesperson informed the media that they are expecting spectators in the one lakh plus range (30,000 people only for the main grandstand) and the circuit has been planned bearing in mind these factors.
The track will also be compatible for a few other world class racing events. The Buddh International Racing Circuit will also be able to incorporate events like MotoGP and World Superbike Championship. Peripheral to the F1 Circuit will be a drift circuit, a karting circuit as well as other smaller circuits for motor sporting events.
The Jaypee Group is quite keen on promoting motorsport in India and preparations for the event are in full flow. Arrangements for the Race Weekend include, special feeder coaches from all major metro stations in Delhi to the circuit and a special Traffic Police task force for the excessive traffic influx on the Race weekend.
The ticket sales for the 2011 Indian Grand Prix (doesn’t it feel wonderful to say ‘Indian Grand Prix’!) begin in June. And like most of us at Motoism I am sure you can’t wait for October to come either. |
