Former world No 1 Carlos Moya fought back tears on Wednesday as he formally announced his retirement from tennis at the age of 34 due to a recurring foot injury. Moya will play his final event in Seville in December, with a long-term foot injury leading to his decision to call it quits.

The 34-year-old former French Open champion broke the news at a press conference today, bringing to an end a 15-year professional career which delivered 20 ATP titles.

The 34-year-old is currently ranked as the world No. 519 after managing to play just six tournaments in 2010, including the Australian Open where he was defeated by 119th ranked Illya Marchenko in the first round.

Moya, who turned professional in 1995, is a claycourt specialist who won the French Open in 1998 and peaked as world number one in March 1999. He also won the Davis Cup with Spain in 2004.

'I wanted to play the big tournaments and say goodbye but I got to the Madrid tournament and I still wasn't 100%,' Moya said. 'I realised with that match that the moment had arrived. It's not how I dreamed of ending my career.'

Reflecting on what the future now holds, Moya added: 'I'll keep on with my gym in Mallorca. I have a sports business and I'll dedicate more time to my wife, my daughter and my family. But I'll definitely miss tennis.'
